Dry and Wet Tanning

Whether you choose to have your hides dry or wet tanned is merely a matter of preference.  Our stretch is optimal with either method.  However, each type of tanning has a different preparation process before mounting.

With dry tanning:

When relaxing skins, add 4 oz of salt, or one handful, per gallon of water.  This will reduce the risk of acid swell.

Capes and small mammals - Submerge head in cool water for 20 minutes; Submerge remainder of skin for an additional 10 minutes.  Remove skins, drain well, cover with plastic and let them sit overnight at room temperature.

Life size skins - Submerge head and feet in water for 20 minutes and then submerge remaining skin for an additional 10 minutes.  Remove skins, drain well, cover with plastic and let them sit overnight at room temperature.

Bear rugs - Submerge head and feet in water for 20 minutes.  Pull out and sponge the remainder of the skins, cover with plastic and sweat overnight.

With wet tanning:

Thaw frozen hides at room temperature and mount when finished.

It is worth mentioning that wet tanning requires us to freeze your hides before we ship them back to you.  Typically this occurs on a Monday. Naturally frozen hides weigh more than dry hides so shipping costs will be a bit more.
